BASM’s 2011 Year in Review

So, it’s officially the end of 2011. We’re literally a few hours (at least for those of us in the Western hemisphere) away from saying goodbye to 2011 and welcoming 2012 along with all that is has to offer. Overall, it’s been a great year here at Big Apple Style Marketing and we want to say a huge thank you to all the firms, partners, clients and friends who made the 2011 journey so much fun & so intriguing along the way!

Through it all, we’ve stayed true to our roots. Back in April of 2009, BASM was formed initially as a digital entertainment marketing firm that focused solely on music. Over the years we’ve expanded to accommodate other forms of entertainment but in 2011, we returned to what made BASM so awesome in the beginning – music. 2011 saw BASM partnering up with major music distribution, discovery and radio platforms like Pandora, Jelli, Shazam, Stingray Digital and Promo Only. On top of that, BASM decided to be a stand out entertainment firm by offering to do something that isn’t so common – helping international artists successfully break into and maintain a presence in the US market. This led to the decision to formally position BASM as a firm that places a significant emphasis on helping international content (music, film & TV) to break into the sometimes “difficult to enter” US market. And we kicked off this division by working with major groups in Japan such as fade and RIZE along with popular rock personality & pop culture influencer, Jesse McFaddin. Expect to see continued updates about these artists as well as other bands from Japan and other parts of Asia as 2012 begins!

2011 marked the “repositioning” phase for BASM. We streamlined and refocused our efforts to ensure maximum effect for every campaign or opportunity we provided for our clients. We made new long lasting partnerships that helped us to officially extend our reach into Asia and opened up new marketing initiatives for the firm.  And most importantly, we’ve maintained our standard of being the boutique marketing consultancy that offers measurable results to independent or smaller labels and production houses – thereby evening the playing field for access to top platforms between indies and majors. We always have direct relationships with partners and don’t rely on “batch and blast” distribution channels. We have direct relationships with our clients as well, making the entire process of launching a campaign that much more important to us.

So to the long time clients & partners or those who just recently connected with us in 2011, we want to say thank you for making 2011 such a success and we look forward to a prosperous, exciting and busy 2012!

A Shameless Self Plug! Re-Launching My First Novel: Mind Games

I know I know…I almost NEVER talk about myself on here. Sure, I wax poetic on marketing campaigns I love and the activities of my clients, but normally I keep myself out of the situation! But today, I decided to do a bit of self-promo. So, about 2 years ago, I wrote a romance suspense novel that really is more of a peek into the concept of the butterfly effect as it relates to human nature, love, and emotions. If you’re not familiar with the idea of the “butterfly effect”, it’s basically the belief that even the most inconsequential of actions by one person can create enormous after effects – both good and bad – in the lives of those around them (even to the extent of people that they don’t personally know…think 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon…I know…I’m running on about psych and sociological concepts!).

The title of my book is called Mind Games, and primarily follows my lead character, Michelle Beauford and examines how her life and that of her social circle is irrevocably changed after she meets a mysterious man while on vacation. So, long story short, I officially published this book last year just after New Year’s but I was so busy focusing on getting Big Apple Style Marketing off the ground that I really didn’t have time to do a proper promotional campaign for it. In fact, I didn’t even have time to make a proper piece of cover art for it. Right now, the book is exclusively available in e-book format on Amazon.com specifically for the Kindle and also on Smashwords.com for all other major ebook formats (i.e. iTunes, Sony, etc).

But the main reason that I’m doing this self plug is a bit of a two fold thing. One, I finally got off my duff (lol) and had a proper cover art piece created. And I have to give a shout out to MalArts for creating it for me! ^_^ And the other reason is because 10% from each book sale will be donated to charity. I’ve been doing this since the jump, but no one really knew because I wasn’t promoting it. So, a while back, I wrote about a charity that I support called Building Community Bridges or BCB.

BCB, is a not for profit charity that focuses on providing water pumps in West African villages to offer alternatives for clean drinking water. This is a severely vital necessity, since in many areas, not only are villagers trekking long miles just to access water, but they’re also sharing those same water supplies with local animals – leading to potential contamination from deadly diseases. In addition to providing access to clean and consistent drinking water, BCB also focuses on specifically training women in a variety of the villages with trades that offer financial self sustainability, education services, providing health care in areas where it is much needed and acting as an advocate for women and children, in countries that have a high incidence of child trafficking and gender imbalance.

So, as a Christmas/Holiday gift for that special someone in your life who loves to read, I suggest you snag a copy of my awesome book! Right now it’s on sale specifically on Amazon.com (also available in the UK, France, Germany, Italy & Spain) for $3.99 and on Smashwords.com for $3.99 as well. And as an added incentive, I’m offering the Smashwords version for 25% off (now $2.99) if you use the following coupon code: DY42G. The coupon is good until January 20th. And on both websites, you can read a sample chapter!

And for those who are curious, Mind Games is just the first in what I want to be a series of romance suspense novels that focuses on the gritty nature of love. Right now I’m currently working on the follow up novel, Nemesis. :)

Look Who’s on Jelli.com…RIZE!!

Yup, you read right!

The very popular Japanese rock band RIZE finally went live on Jelli.com last week! We’ve added four of RIZE’s albums: K.O., Alterna, Experience and Spit&Yell. Jelli.com is an internet radio station in the US that can also influence playlists for major terrestrial US stations like Hot97 here in NYC (for those of you who don’t know, BASM is headquartered in NYC!). So, if you get enough user-clicked “rocks” (i.e. likes) for a track, it’ll go from just playing in the general Jelli.com record pool to being shifted to the digital playlist for a terrestrial station and eventually get added to their terrestrial air rotation lists. So, Jelli can be a great opportunity for new-to-market artists & groups to create a grassroots buzz effort.

RIZE is a hard rock/metal band that has been around for eleven years with major accomplishments such as performing at Live 8 in 2005 and Live Earth in 2007, having their song “Zero” licensed by Coke Zero Japan/Asia, various songs used for PS2 games such as “BioHazard”, and have appeared live with NIN, Run DMC, Jay Z & Oasis. They toured in the US in 2003 on an “All American” tour with The Kottonmouth Kings, performing at 38 shows across the country.

Sample Stems Now Available for Jesse McFaddin’s “STAND UP! Fund” Album

Yesterday we dropped the news that Jesse McFaddin, J-Rock icon & lead singer of RIZE, is coming out with a new album that will most definitely turn the industry on it’s head because of the ambitious production process that’s being planned. And today, Jesse has officially released the sample tracks for his soon to be released album, “STAND UP! Fund” at http://www.triberize.net/standup/audition.html.

Jesse McFaddin releases demo stems for "STAND UP! Fund"

If you haven’t checked out the release about “STAND UP! Fund”, the premise is that this will be an entirely crowd source produced album. This means that Jesse’s creating sample versions of each of the eleven tracks that will be released in Spring 2012. Production teams will have the chance to create their own versions of the tracks – remixed, new lyrics, etc. They can then submit their final edits for consideration and if selected, will then work directly with Jesse to create a polished final version that will be released in North America and Japan.

This is an ideal opportunity for any production teams that are interested in breaking into the Japanese music scene since Jesse is considered a “taste maker” and trend setter in Japan and has launched many an artist’s career through his own label and various collaborations.

Interested producers can visit http://www.triberize.net/standup/audition.html to download the samples and contact standup@triberize.net or submissions@bigapplestylemarketing.com for more details.

Jesse McFaddin Kicks Off Production of Unique Crowd Sourced Album “STAND UP! Fund”

For immediate release

December 11, 2011

JRock Icon Jesse McFaddin to begin production on a fully crowd sourced album

JRock icon Jesse McFaddin to begin production on a fully crowd sourced album

To commemorate the eleventh year since his band RIZE officially launched in Japan, popular J-Rock icon Jesse McFaddin is now releasing details for an ambitious plan to drop an album next spring where the production has been entirely crowd sourced. Throughout his career, Jesse has a history of encouraging creativity specifically within the youth demographic. Jesse’s latest solo album is entitled STAND UP! Fund and isn’t in reference to a charity but rather his desire to encourage action and creativity amongst the youth. For this album, Jesse is targeting the North American market and wants to support emerging production teams across the continent to showcase their talents in North America and Asia.

STAND UP! Fund will be an eleven-track album with a unique approach to foster creativity among emerging production companies in North America. Starting this month, eleven demo tracks will be made available on www.triberize.net/standup. Production teams can download these samples and use it as a basis for inspiration to remix the original version with full creative license. Producers can change lyrics, melodies and more. Once finished, they can then contact standup@triberize.net for instructions to submit their finished works. Jesse will then pick one user submitted version for each of the eleven tracks and begin working directly with each production team to create a polished final edit.

Production teams selected to work directly with Jesse will receive full production credits. Additionally, Jesse will also release STAND UP! Fund in Japan, which will help promote and expose the production teams to the popular Japanese music scene, which is influential specifically within the Asian market.

Jesse McFaddin is the lead singer and founder of the extremely popular Japanese rock group, RIZE . RIZEis a hard rock/metal band that has been around for eleven years with major accomplishments such as performing at Live 8 in 2005 and Live Earth in 2007, having their song “Zero” licensed by Coke Zero Japan/Asia, various songs used for PS2 games such as “BioHazard”, and have appeared live with NIN, Run DMC, Jay Z & Oasis. They toured in the US in 2003 on an “All American” tour with The Kottonmouth Kings, performing at 38 shows across the country. Both the group, RIZE , and the lead singer, Jesse McFaddin , are major icons in the Japanese music and pop culture scenes, influencing music, entertainment and fashion by way of Jesse’s clothing line Slip&Co which will debut in the US in February 2012 at the influential MAGIC – s.l.a.t.e. convention.
